Semester keempat ada Scientific and Critical Reading.

Lupa, deh. Tapi walaupun berbahasa Indonesia, jangan ditanya. Aku aja nggak ngerti bukunya ngomong apa!

Mulai semester inilah aku merasa aku agak sedikit ‘salah program studi’ :D .

A review made by me:

“An Intercultural Approach to English Language Teaching” Book Review

An Intercultural Approach to English Language Teaching is a book written by John Corbett. He is a researcher that has been travelled all around the world in order to did research related to education.
Judging from its title, this book’s topic is about intercultural approach in classroom teaching, especially English language teaching. Again, judging from the word “teaching”, this book was made especially for English teachers.
The writer wants the readers, especially teachers, to be able to equip learners with cultural knowledge in the way of exploring cultural difference so they can explore their own culture as well as the target culture. It is hoped that learners are able to negotiate the distance between their own and another culture; thus, they can be said as cultural diplomats.
This book contains ten chapters, but the most related chapter to the book title is the second chapter, Implementing an Intercultural Approach. It reflects on the sub chapter Designing Tasks for the Intercultural Classroom. In this sub chapter, the writer mentions the task as consisting of six components which have to be specified for any communicative activity: goal, input, activities, learner’s role, teacher’s role, and settings. (Nunan, 1989: 10–11). These components can be modified if the aim of the task is to raise cultural awareness as well as to develop communicative skills. The following is the example of the goal that has been specified: to research, describe and explain patterns of behaviour in a certain community, such as youth subcultures, professional business people or scientists, or Scottish country dancers.
I do agree with a statement from the first chapter, An Intercultural Approach to Second Language Education. He gives a statement that the ultimate goal of an intercultural approach to language education is not so much ‘native speaker competence’ but rather an ‘intercultural communicative competence’ (e.g. Byram, 1997b; Guilherme, 2002). Intercultural communicative competence includes the ability to understand the language and behaviour of the target community, and explain it to members of the ‘home’ community – and vice versa. Learning a language is impossible to be succeeding if learners do not employ this.
This book is helpful for English teachers, yet it is not helpful enough on the other way. In every chapter, the writer gives a short sight about what are the chapter going talked about. He marks some important points of a chapter. Unfortunately, that some important points do not stated clearly on the sub chapters. For example, in the first chapter the writer marks one important point in the opening of the chapter: A review of the role of ‘culture’ in ELT. There is no sub chapter that explicitly stated about it, or in other words, readers must search it harder in order to find “the role of ‘culture’ in ELT”.
After all, this book is a proper book in teaching English related to culture. There are books that reviewed about language teaching/learning and culture, but I think this book is the most relevant one, since from the title I could judge it. The most important is, this book is ‘teaching a teacher how to use intercultural approach in teaching a class”, not just explain the theory alone.

Aku rasa sudah banyak orang yang paham tentang review, tapi kalau annotated bibliography?
Menurut panduan yang dikeluarkan The Learning Centre of the University of New South Wales (2006):

Contents of an Annotated Bibliography

An annotation may contain all or part of the following elements depending on the word limit and the content of the sources you are examining.
• Provide the full bibliographic citation
• Indicate the background of the author(s)
• Indicate the content or scope of the text
• Outline the main argument
• Indicate the intended audience
• Identify the research methods (if applicable)
• Identify any conclusions made by the author/s
• Discuss the reliability of the text
• Highlight any special features of the text that were unique or helpful (charts, graphs etc.)
• Discuss the relevance or usefulness of the text for your research
• Point out in what way the text relates to themes or concepts in your course
• State the strengths and limitations of the text
• Present your view or reaction to the text

Ini adalah salah dua contoh annotated bibliography yang pernah kubuat:

Contoh 1:

Research dilemmas: Paradigms, methods and methodology

Mackenzie, Noella, & Knipe, Sally. (2006). Research dilemmas: Paradigms, methods and methodology. IIER, 16(2), 193-205.

Annotated bibliography:
Research dilemmas: Paradigms, methods and methodology is an article which is written by Noella Mackenzie and Sally Knipe from Charles Sturt University. This article is written for the new researchers who face the dilemma in using the appropriate approaches for their researches. The discussion of research paradigms, including definition and discussing the rule of paradigms is concluded here. The following contents of this article are about how the research paradigm and methodology are combined together. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies are also discussed for the decisions the researchers have to make.
The authors give this article strength with presenting tables to show the kinds of paradigms, the methods that are used in various kinds of those paradigms, and a diagram about the research process. There is no research method used because the authors did not do any research as this article already has real and reliable data to support the topic. It is said that the research books are not usually helpful because many of those books make the new researchers confused. The authors strongly suggest combining the qualitative and quantitative methods for their research articles. We think that the authors give a good suggestion; the beginner researchers can use both quantitative and qualitative methods. The beginner researchers can also look for another source besides the research books they reference and discuss with their advisers or colleagues about what should they choose among quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods.

Contoh 2:

Annotated Bibliography:

The beliefs of two expert EFL learners
The article examines the belief systems of two expert learners and how they affect the learning process of those learners. The author interviewed two expert learners who have different backgrounds. The first participant is Kati. She was not interested in English at first, but after knowing that she has relatives living in UK, she changed her mind. She went to the UK to learn English in the ‘real’ context, not just learn it in a formal way in school or university. She feels difficult in learning English in a formal way. She thinks that if someone wants to learn foreign language, he must learn it in where it is spoken. In addition, it is more important to be more focused on domains where she good at, such as vocabulary and grammar instead of pronunciation where she is not good at.
In contrast to Kati, another participant, Petra, has passion in English since she was in school because she was good at it. She thinks that studying foreign language abroad is a good idea; however, it is not so important for her to go abroad for she can’t live far away from home more than two weeks. She also adds that it is important to focus on all domains of a language because if you want to good at something, you must work hard for it.
Petra’s beliefs appear to be more stable and have changed little, however, Kati’s beliefs appear to be much more domain-specific, dynamic and less stable.
Rather than describe one set of learner beliefs as positive or negative, it will be more useful to think that the learners’ belief systems are different, according to particular individual background. In other words, there are many different possible pathways to language learning success. From the case of Kati and Petra, we know that we can success in the same thing with different backgrounds.
I can conclude that this article proves every person has the same chance with other people in the same thing, just the process he does different with others. When we learn something because we really like it, the process of learning will be easier, whatever the process we do to reach our goals.

Yang menjadi ciri khas dari annotated bibliography yaitu adanya citation di awal tulisan. Kalau di teks pertama itu citation-nya:

Mackenzie, Noella, & Knipe, Sally. (2006). Research dilemmas: Paradigms, methods and methodology. IIER, 16(2), 193-205.

Sementara yang kedua:

Mercer, Sarah. (2011). The beliefs of two expert EFL learners. The Language Learning Journal, 39(1), 57-74.

Langsung saja aku mencak-mencak menyalahkan EndNote.

Mulai semester itu pula aku nggak mau sering-sering ngecek web siakad (sistem informasi akademik), takut kalau ternyata nilaiku ‘jelek’ seperti semester tiga.

Aku belum mengecek nilai Scientific and Critical Reading waktu nggak sengaja lihat status BBM seorang teman sekelas.

Memang, there is always rainbow after the rain, walaupun matkul Quantitative and Qualitative Analyses dan Educational Research Method juga bikin repot!
